Light In Darkness

When the lights go out, we hear better and we grow closer.

Sunday morning, after we sing the songs, we turn to greet one another.  Sounds of glad greeting surrounded us as usual, but suddenly the lights went out. Since a missionary was visiting from the Middle East and was going to be the one giving the message, I thought it was part of the plan at first. But soon realized we'd lost electricity.

Phone's lights came on. The emergency door to outside was propped open for what little light we might receive on a rainy day. And Mr. Missionary proceeded to give us God's message.

It was delightful, actually. He was preaching from Revelation, and announced the Hebrew value of numbers in the book. He pointed to the number seven and its meaning in Hebrew: completeness or perfection. (I love that!) Then he began to ask questions of the congregation, "Do you know how many times _______ is mentioned in Revelation?" To which the answer three times was, "Seven!" Of Jesus, fourteen. And of the Lamb, 28. All multiples of seven.

Breathtaking!

I noticed the small children were eager to answer the questions. Namely, Ida, my four year old granddaughter who is usually coloring pictures next to me. I was kind of in awe at the level of engagement. And how still the children sat in the dark with us.

When the message was over, our pianist walked up to the piano, her husband with his phone light behind her so she could play Amazing Grace.

My grandson, Oliver and I scooted closer together with my phone light in order to sing the hymn. I looked around and noticed all of the congregation had scooted together and the whole loss of light moved me to wonder in the power it had to move us to be more in tune with our ears and closer together in song.

And I think God took much joy in our attentiveness and our unity in bearing up in the dark together.

don't miss a thing
