Parents Establishing Good Foundations

May we all do everything we can to share wisdom and encouragement with those who are in the trenches of parenting today.

Parents Establishing Good Foundations

* * *

Most of us want to do a good job as parents. We love our kids, and want them to thrive. We desire for them to be happy, to have good experiences and to generally be successful. These are fairly universal desires.

I want to encourage you to be specific in your desires so you can be intentional in your parenting.
In fact, in my experience, starting every day in prayer is essential to parenting!
Our lives are aimless without goals.
Your goals guide your daily choices; so having parenting goals is essential in making wise decisions.
God wanted a relationship with me
I learned that my behavior could never be perfect enough to measure up to His Holy standards, so He sent Jesus.
That’s called grace
Or knowing how to parent.
Deuteronomy 6:1-9
From there I received my parenting goals:
  1. That they would love the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind and strength.
  2. That they would fear Him (Know that He has ultimate authority)
  3. That they would love His word (Know that His words are for their good)
  4. That they would love to obey God even if it hurt because the hurt would be temporary but His way was ALWAYS best for them.
As a result of having those goals I also found direction for my daily choices in this same passage.
  1. I needed the Word of God in my own heart. (My time with God was a priority, I studied scripture for myself and prayed)
  2. I needed to im press them on my children (Enable them to hide God’s word in their hearts so I memorized scripture with them and taught them about Jesus)
  3. I sought teachable moments and brought God into everyday living. Whether I was pushing them on the swing, driving them to school, we were camping, or I was tucking them in bed we talked about God’s creation or sang songs centering on God.
These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear   the   Lord   your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.    Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey   so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, promised you. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.   Love   the   Lord   your God with all your heart   and with all your soul and with all your strength.     These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. ~Deuteronomy 6:1-9~
Tomorrow I will talk about the precious foundation stones:
Knowing (trusting) Jesus personally, and honoring and
submitting to God’s authority.
don't miss a thing
