Delight Happens When A Heart Truly Hears Heaven's Truth

Something happened when I was sitting by the fire and I heard the bird sing outsideIt was as if the tune was made conspicuous for my hearing. The moment after I heard it, I wondered how it happened that my ears took it in and how often I must miss background details. Rare it is to hear a bird from inside my house closed tight against the cold.

My mind went back to that moment as I read this today:

Jesus was teaching them with parables, and was saying to them . . .

“Listen to this! Behold" . . .(Insert the parable of the sower) . . .

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” See Mark 4:1-9

He sandwiched the parable between two urgent appeals to listen up! Hear this! Give me your ears!

I’ve done that when I want to confirm my words are heard because of the importance of what I am saying, “Did you hear me?” and, “Are you listening?” {dear children}

A topic close to my heart, the power of words, moves me to consider more carefully the power of hearing words with a listening heart.

Obviously the crowds gathered around Jesus were hearing his words, but were they really listening and taking them to heart?

Were His words sinking in? Jesus was imploring them to lean in. And I’ve noticed all through the gospel of Mark so far, Jesus imploring for hearts to really hear him.

Many souls were locked tight. Especially those who thought they had the answers already. Those whose hearts were shut off to really hearing.

The Scribes and Pharisees were continually conspiring against Jesus because they heard but never took to heart His words as they listened through prejudicial filters.

They had already made up their minds about Jesus and so their hearts could not be open to hearing.

And when we don’t hear truth with our hearts, we don’t see truth with our eyes. We remain in the dark.

Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17

Eternal Life was at stake that day by the lake. Jesus implored the listeners because of the significance of His message.

If one misses really hearing Jesus, they wont know The Way to the Father. This is true for initial salvation and continues to be true of our faith journey to Heaven.

So. Many. Times. I have failed to take His word into my heart because of my injurious thinking. I still have barriers in my heart to truths. Foundational to all hardness of heart are one of two things {perhaps two sides of the same coin} Pride and Unbelief.

Pride and unbelief deafen and blind our hearts to the truth of the good news that Jesus came to seek and save us and set us free.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

On Sunday when I heard that bird and looked up and stopped seeing only me, I was set free. Next time I feel bound by something, I hope I remember to remind myself to take to heart the truth: Jesus loves me.

Might you need to let that sink in deep today? 1 John 3:16
