Christmas: Angels All Around and Devils Are Felled

Angels are everywhere! The Christmas story could be outlined by the appearance of angels.

Angels that came bringing God’s message. To Zechariah and Elizabeth, “You will have a son and call him John.” To Mary, “You will give birth to the Savior.” To Joseph, “Your betrothed, Mary is pregnant by the Holy Spirit.” and to the Shepherds, “Glory to God in the Highest and peace to His people on earth.”

This all has me thinking of the times I know angels attended my family.

When our kids were little, we lived near a creek. It was actually right out our back door and down a cliff. I was experiencing fear about my kids drowning. That happens to moms, right? So I was praying for God’s protection and had a vision of angels placed along the perimeter of my back yard. It gave me such peace.

One year, living across from a lake and up on a hill, we often experienced strong winds. As they swept across the lake and up the hill, they seemed to gain great power. One day our neighbor removed the two large pine trees standing guard at the bottom of the hill. In May when winds blow wild, we realized the pines had been a wind-break, as late one night we heard a loud freight train-like groan and I raced to get my kids from their beds. By the time I got to the bottom of the stairs they were already down and the ‘storm’ had already passed. In the morning we found two huge old oak trees fallen-one went East and one went South-both should have fallen directly on the kids’ bedrooms.

And I knew it, angels had stood on the corner and averted destruction.

Have YOU experienced the ministry of angels? Hebrews 1:14

The existence of angels doesn’t enter our conversation often, or even our thoughts it seems. But their reality has been brought to the forefront for me this Christmas. And if we acknowledge them, we will also acknowledge that the dark spirits are out there at work as well-opposing, and evil.

And my favorite hymn’s lyrics come to mind: “And though the world with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear for God has willed His truth to triumph through us.” John 14:6

The angels went forth to announce the arrival of the King of Heaven to be born in human flesh, the One who would triumph over the devils of this world, the devil’s work in keeping us in bondage to sin and death. He came to rescue us from the devil who had taken rulership from Adam and Eve back there in the beginning.

The sin of acting independently from God brought on the curse. Jesus came to redeem from the curse of death. To rescue us from Satan. To deliver us from the curse of sin.

He began it this way: “Repent and believe, for the Kingdom of God has come to earth. Believe the Good news!!” Mark 1:15 And that is how it begins for every child of God. He came down as a gift that we only can receive. Have you received Him?

Have you repented by turning away from your own way? Do you believe the Son of God came to destroy the devil’s work of keeping you in bondage to sin?

The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.  1 John 3:8

That message the angels came to deliver? That gift that God sent the first Christmas? THAT is GOOD NEWS!!! The Savior-He is mighty to save!
